Reputation management amid the coronavirus outbreak

The impact of the coronavirus disease will be significantly different according to the industry or sector concerned. Entrepreneurs and management teams must set the overall business operational strategy to combat the effects of the virus. Of course the priority is public health and security, and we must put people first. It is also crucial however particularly during this crisis that sustainable initiatives are taken across all levels of an organisation.

A Reputation Management exercise may assist in implementing the requisite precautionary measures to mitigate any potential, irreparable damage to a person or business. With technology fundamentally disrupting the way the world works, appropriate safeguards must be implemented, particularly considering the substantial risks and potential consequences involved. Transparency, accountability and sustainability are nowadays major pillars that must underlie the operations of any private or public organisation.

Given the  coronavirus outbreak, the next recession may be destructive for those not adequately prepared. Such negative, unpredictable problems call for drastic cultural transformation, with long-term, strategic planning. It is of critical importance that potential risks are addressed swiftly. A Reputation Management project consists of, amongst other things, Media Assessment and Management, Reputation and Crisis Analysis, Personnel Awareness, Decision-making Evaluation, Risk Assessment and Mitigation Measures and Branding.

Ultimately, a Reputation Manager is appointed for the event that an internal or external factor calls for the necessary actions to be taken in a timely and effective manner. As part of the Crisis Management team, the Reputation Manager should be responsible for ensuring that the Crisis Plan and Team are kept up-to-date with relevant events and matters through consistent training sessions. Alternatively, an external Crisis Management Firm could be appointed to undertake all planning and action stages.

The coronavirus outbreak has affected all business sectors across the world. A detailed continuity plan including reputation and crisis management measures could help organisations sustain ongoing operations to the extent possible.
