As part of our Responsibility & Sustainability Policy Kyriacos Kourtellos attended the Limassol Citizens’ 1st Public Meeting for the 300,000 Trees in Lemesos initiative, supported by the Sustainable Energy Lab, the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, and the Cyprus University of Technology. This initiative is nationwide and its ownership remains with the Citizens. This introductory meeting brought together interested members of the public, increased awareness of Climate Change and the importance of – amongst other things - planting trees in Limassol.
The speakers highlighted that everyone must take immediate action to mitigate the effects of Climate Change. Following various scientific studies and having identified minor public green areas in Limassol, they analysed certain proposals made, such as a vast community park. Also different ideas were put forward by members of the public. Hence, an Action Plan has been devised by the Action Team, which will organize more specific teams to address the various aspects involved.
Indeed, the right time to act is now; an old Chinese proverb says ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.’ We are facing unprecedented catastrophic phenomena worldwide, such as the Amazon rainforest wildfires and melting ice sheets. It is in fact no longer Climate Change, but a Climate Crisis.
The public is willing to contribute, but more support is needed, particularly from the competent authorities. Of course, appropriate collaboration, sufficient funding and mass efforts are key for a successful outcome in this welcomed initiative.
